Christiano Ronaldo Made A Statement After Portugal Seal World Cup Qualification
The Real Madrid superstar helped his country to a 2-0 win over Switzerland to clinch top spot in Group B
Cristiano Ronaldo enjoyed jubilant celebrations with his Portugal teammates after clinching their place at the World Cup with a win over Switzerland.
The Euro 2016 champions needed a win over the Swiss, who went into the match with a 100% record in qualifying, to avoid having to go through a play-off and they overtook their rivals to take top spot with a 2-0 victory.
Ronaldo played the full 90 minutes, and joined his team in wild celebrations after a Johan Djourou own goal sand Andre Silva’s tap in sealed their place in Russia next year.
The Real Madrid talisman posted a picture of the entire squad and management team celebrating on the pitch after the game, along with the caption: “Great team effort! Thank you for all your support. Russia, here we come!”
Portugal were a number of big name countries in danger of missing out on automatic qualification, with a defeat in the reverse fixture looking like being the difference as they and Switzerland swept aside the rest of the group with ease.
Their vastly superior goal difference proved to be key though, with Ronaldo netting 15 of his side’s 31 goals that allowed them to win the group ahead of Vladimir Petkovic’s men.
Ronaldo, one of the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or for a record-equalling fifth time this year, will now hope to help Portugal cause an upset at a second successive major tournament after their shock win over France in the European Championships final.
He joined fellow La Liga superstar Lionel Messi in helping his side qualify for the tournament, after the Barcelona hero hit a hat-trick to fire Argentina to a place in Russia.
