Child adoption, the means for happiness of childless couples
Families experiencing childlessness can be happier adopting babies from registered child-care centers, so say experts.
Such families may also be blessed with their own children thereafter, if they give real love to the children they have so adopted, the experts also agreed.
More than 80% of couples with adopted children have experienced happier moment at young and old age.
The experts say the adoption is the easiest way to retuning joy to homes without children of their own , while in vitro fertilisation(IVF) another means of having one’s biological children is not often affordable to averaged families .
Data from Family Free Foundation indicate that in the past 10 years, more than 45% of newly married couples face childlessness problems, out of the number, only 30% have been able to resolve the issue without involving extended family relations.
Of the number, only 20% were able to resort to IVF approach, while about 15% have sought solution by adopting children.
But even those that opted for adoption procedure, about 60% take to informal means of adopting babies, including “buying off” babies from mothers, who are not properly programmed before giving up their babies for unknown adopters.
But according to Mrs. Celina Okoro, a child psychologist with the SOS Motherless Baby’s Home, any adoption procedure, which is not properly documented, is prone to abuse.
“Ministries of youth and social welfare in each state in Nigeria are given the mandate to handle child adoption processes, in line with the culture and tradition, which must also be in agreement with the Constitution.
“But what happens often is that most couples resort to cutting corners by going to unregistered baby making factories, often run by quarks and pay any amount charged them by the owners of such outfits.
“Cases have been known of some people encouraging young girls to go after men, who put them in family ways and when the babies are delivered, they pay off the innocent mothers and collect the babies for sale at such a price that could not have been the right amount for anybody willing to adopt a child through the authorized homes”, she said.
But she said registered child-care centre is expected to follow procedure, which include having the couple pass through an expert, who will educate them on the details including dos and don’ts, according to the expert.
Though some culture are yet to accept child adoption as a means to finding missing peace in couples not having their biological children, Mr. Robert Oduyemi said, the reason for some culture frowning at adoption is the question of not knowing whose father the baby is.
A study by Parenthood Federation Foundation said most homes that have adopted children have found peace of mind, which has also seen them have their own biological children later.
“However, the problem is that some couples have turned some blind eyes against the children that they adopted, a moment they have their own biological children. T
“But hose, who have seen the adopted children as their biological children have had course to smile at younger age and at their old age,” says the study.
