2 men given 100 each for gay act
Two men each was to face up to 100 strokes of the cane after neighbours reported tdhem to sharia police for having gay sex in Indonesia’s conservative Aceh province.
Marzuki, the sharia police’s chief investigator, said on Saturday that residents in the provincial capital, Banda Aceh, reported the men, aged 23 and 20, to police on March 29.
In Indonesia, local police offices are often flooded with accusations of sexual immorality banned by Islamic law.
The police officer said the two men had “confessed” to being a gay couple and this was supported by video taken by a resident.
Aceh is the only province in Muslim-majority Indonesia to practise sharia law, which was a concession made by the national government to end a years-long war with separatists.
A sharia code implemented two years ago allows up to 100 lashes for morality offences, including gay sex.
